Artist Statement

My original training was in welding and metal fabrication. This technical background provided me with plenty of skills and techniques but had no creative element. I had taken my metal fabrication skills as far as I could go but felt there was something missing.

This was a good time to get away. We were on holiday in Sydney and by chance saw a small sign "The Australian Craft Show". That's where I saw some metal work by Canberra's Ralf Zibar this provided the creative spark. (That's what was missing) Adelaide's Geoff Barnes introduced me to the powerhammer and some blacksmithing do's and dont's.
The rest is history……

With the first strike, the hairs on my back stood up.
"I have done this before".
Since 1992 I have worked as an Artist – Blacksmith specializing in the design forging and fabrication of fine decorative, functional and sculptural Ironwork.
My sculpture is a combination of traditional forged Ironwork (blacksmithing) and contemporary metal fabrication (Boilermaker).

I draw on the skills of each trade as required using the tools of both trades as a sculptor to create...............

I typically work in steel but will combine ferrous and non ferrous metals and occasionally cast elements. Because I work to high levels of craftsmanship I do not have to hide my workmanship with paint. Therefore my sculpture is typically buffed, polished and lacquered to reveal the craftsmanship and exhibit the natural beauty of the materials in which I work.
